On The Road

It’s absolutely possible to eat healthy on the road, and it’s not a hassle if I’m prepared for it.  One thing I do is keep a small ice chest in the car. Then I can easily carry road food from home, or stop at a regular market and get ice and snacks while I’m out, especially if it’s an unexpected trip. If I’m going to be on the road for more than 8 hours, I pack a snack bag. Even if I think I don’t want them, I’ve learned to buy or pack them anyway:

Baby carrots
Celery stalks
Apples
Pears
Bananas

Hummus
Pita bread
Peanut butter

Having these on hand keeps me from making hasty, unwise food choices when I’m out. Hey, if I only get 50 grams of fat per day, I want to plan wisely and enjoy them Not get them all at once in a bad candy bar that sounded good when my stomach was growling at 3:00 pm at a Jiffy Mart.

I may even make a nice veggie sandwich to take with me, or the makings for one. That way I can stop for a break under a nice shady tree somewhere and toss some hummus and carrotsticks into a spinach wrap and have that for lunch with an apple. I’ve even in a pinch just gone to Subway and gotten a turkey or veggie sub with no mayo or cheese. Hard to ask for like that. But good once I’m on the road with it in my hand, and under 20 grams of fat. A much better choice than an 80gr of fat burger or fried chicken, fast food sandwich or burrito.

The ice chest mostly comes in handy for when I make trips out of town and find new natural markets. I know they’ll have a refrigerator full of yummy, fresh-made healthy sandwiches for my lunch. Which brings me to…

KNOW WHERE THE NATURAL MARKETS ARE

One good thing to do before you take a trip is look online and see where the natural markets are on the way. I keep in my car my maps of everywhere I go and directions to get there, along with maps of where the markets and restaurants are. That way when I get somewhere even unexpectedly, if I’ve been there before, it’s likely I have a map and notes in the car about the area.
